Nikon just launched the D7500, the company’s follow-up to the D7200 and the latest mid-range DSLR in its DX-format series. Targeted at prosumers, the D7500 builds on the DNA of Nikon’s successful flagship - the D500 - and attempts to bring professional features to photographers looking to up their game. Here’s five things we think everyone should know about the camera:
1) The D7500 is for enthusiasts, and has Nikon’s top of the line specs
Although it is a prosumer DSLR, the D7500 inherits flagship features from the top-of-the-line D500, such as its 20.9 megapixel CMOS sensor and EXPEED 5 image processing engine - vastly improving performance as compared to the D7200.
To help photographers capture images in low light with minimal noise, the D7500’s DX-format (APS-C) sensor provides a native ISO range of 100 to 512001.
Images are displayed on a 3.2-inch tilt-angle touchscreen display with a 922,000-dot resolution - and there’s also an eye-level pentaprism optical viewfinder that offers 100% coverage, giving photographers more angles and ways to view and frame their shots.
Photographers who take action shots will be pleased to know that the D7500 can capture photos at a fast 8 frames per second for up to 50 shots at a time in 14-bit RAW. All of these top of the line features are packed into a re-designed camera body which is lighter and more compact, making it ideal for enthusiasts and prosumers on the move.
2) This camera has smart auto functions to assist new and experienced photographers
To aid new photographers, and help veteran ones in experimenting with new styles, the D7500 automatically recognises and analyses each shooting scene and adjusts its settings accordingly when the new Auto Picture Control option is selected. When this option is enabled, the DSLR intelligently determines the optimal colour adjustment by fine-tuning the tone curve, colour and sharpness, delivering consistency across multiple images taken with continuous shooting. Nikon claims that the D7500’s 180K-pixel RGB sensor and 51-point AF system delivers precise autofocus, auto exposure, and auto white balance - enabling photographers to easily take vibrant, true-to-life shots with an ideal focus point, exposure and color temperature. The D7500 also incorporates flicker reduction for still images which reduces exposure variations under flickering light sources. Take a look at some sample shots that Nikon has provided us below:
3) The D7500 is great for videographers too!
Videographers will be pleased to know that Nikon has built this product with them in mind as well. The D7500 can capture video up to a resolution of 4K UHD at 30p, 25p and 24p - in both regular and time-lapse formats. Recording in Full HD 1080p is available at 60p or 50p frame rates, and users can save videos in MP4 and AAC formats - an optimal format for smart devices.
The D7500 also has a special 3-axis in-camera Electronic Vibration Reduction (e-VR) system which will also work in tandem with Nikkor image stabilised lenses - this produces stable, smooth videos and reduces camera shake while shooting Full HD movies by hand. Users looking to record very long videos will be pleased to know that they can simultaneously record files, such as raw uncompressed video data, on external HDMI-compatible devices and the DSLR’s memory card.
4) You can snap, edit and work on the move with the D7500's built in connectivity and software
The D7500 has a suite of connectivity options which enables users to send the photos and videos they take to their mobile devices. With SnapBridge - Nikon’s photo transfer app, and the D7500’s built in Bluetooth and WiFi, photographers can easily send their photos to their phone or tablet and edit them in Lightroom Mobile - or even simply upload them to Instagram or Facebook.
SnapBridge also provides additional functions, including remote shooting, automatic update of camera’s time and location information, embedding of credit information, reception of firmware updates as well as automatic uploads and cloud storage on NIKON IMAGE SPACE.
5) Price and Availability
The D7500’s body will be available for purchase standalone, or together with AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens as a kit. Although local pricing and availability will be released at a later date, Amazon has revealed that the body will be priced around S$1741, and will be sold sometime in summer.
TLDR (Too long, didn’t read)
Overall, the D7500 looks like Nikon’s follow up to the popular D7200 DSLR, and an attempt to entice prosumers by borrowing flagship features from the D500. This is perfect for enthusiasts who are interested in a camera with the best of Nikon’s top of the line specifications at a more affordable price. The D7500 is also well suited for videographers due to it’s 4K and stabilized 1080p video recording capabilities. Common competitor features such as WiFi, Bluetooth, mobile apps, tilt-screens and proprietary smart auto-functions are present on the D7500, making it a worthy contender to the likes of Canon’s EOS 80D and Sony Alpha a77 Mark II.
