By Philip C. BeLive is a homegrown Singaporean app that aims to change the livestreaming scene. With livestreaming becoming more popular in other social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, BeLive aims to ride this growing trend and to bring something new to the table for livestreamers. Co-founded by Kenneth Tan and Lim Kim Hui, BeLive offers a more focused livestreaming experience by offering curated content, with each livestream having its own tag to denote the content of that current stream, letting it be sorted into the different categories on the homepage of the app. The app was created by the BeLive teams based in Singapore and Ho Chi Minh city, after securing US$1.5 million in seed funding from investors such as Mediacorp. It currently has around 1,000 livestreamers registered with their service ever since its beta in February, and sees an average of 300 active livestreamers who stream at least once a week. A huge contender that BeLive has to overcome is its senior and counterpart, Bigo Live, also founded in Singapore. Although BeLive has a huge hurdle to overcome, they aim to set themselves apart from Bigo Live by offering a clean experience, no nudity or other questionable content. BeLive offers strict moderation 24 hours, seven days a week. Undesirable streamers and individuals who go against the app’s rules or who harass other users are removed and banned by moderators. While this moderation is currently done manually, BeLive is exploring better ways to automate this process in the future. Just like other livestreaming platforms, BeLive also offers monetization as well. Viewers can gift streamers they like with virtual gifts, purchased with gems, an in-app currency, which in turn is an in-app purchase. Streamers earn a cut based on the amount and value of the gifts they receive, and in the case of BeLive, Streamers earn a 60% cut (after a cut is paid to the respective app store) compared to the 20% by other livestreaming platforms. Popular streamers, such as student and musician Veekher Wong, have earned an average of about S$100 per streaming session, which lasts from half an hour to an hour. Additionally, for the whole month of April, BeLive is offering an incentive to its streamers, by hitting certain achievements in terms of viewership, the streamers are rewarded with cash. If your hobby is livestreaming, or you are just simply interested to find out more about BeLive, simply download the app here (for iOS users) and here (for Android users).
